FILE NAMING AND COMPRESSION

Naming Files:
The Pro/E Part Library uses the following naming convention:

part_name_vXX.prt.1

    where:

part_name is some descriptive name of the part separated with underscore characters as needed.
_vXX designates the release level of Pro/Engineer that the part was created in.

For example:

gear_involute_spur_v17.prt.1 <-- Good name!
g323invhzz.prt.1 <-- Bad name!

Note: If you have drawing files to accompany your part files, please use the same name but with a .drw extension.

Compressing files:
Archives in the Pro/E Part Library should be created using one of the following file compression methods:

1) compress - Unix
2) gzip - Unix
3) pkzip - DOS/windows

Note: Please create a "readme.txt" file and include it in your archive. This file should contain:

1) a brief description of each file contained in the archive
2) your name/company with email address
3) any other information that may be helpful to the person using the file (e.g. number of features, family table instances, units, parameters, etc.)

If you use Unix, first you must create a single file from all the files you wish to upload with the tar command. For example, to create the tar file "gear_involute_spur_v17.tar" from all the files in the current directory, enter the following command at the Unix prompt:

tar -cvf gear_involute_spur_v17.tar *

To create the final archive file "gear_involute_spur_v17.tar.Z", use the compress command at the Unix prompt:

compress gear_involute_spur_v17.tar

Alternatively, you can use gzip to create the final archive file "gear_involute_spur_v17.tar.gz":

gzip gear_involute_spur_v17.tar

If you use DOS, pkzip has the advantage of requiring only one step to create a single archive from several files. For example, to create an archive "gear_involute_spur_v17.zip" from all the files in the current directory, enter the following command at the DOS prompt:

pkzip gear_involute_spur_v17.zip *.*

Note: An excellent Windows utility that uses pkzip is Winzip. Visit the Winzip site for more information.
[Winzip can even untar and uncompress archives created in Unix.]

Here are some examples of properly named, tarred, and compressed files:

gear_involute_spur_v17.tar.Z
gear_involute_spur_v17.tar.gz
gear_involute_spur_v17.zip

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE

The Pro/E Part Library is supported by our anonymous ftp server, ftp.veng.com.  There are three methods you can use to upload:

Note: Before uploading, please make sure your archive follows the Pro/E Part Library conventions on File Naming and Compression.

Method 1: Use your web browser to upload files:
Unfortunately, some browsers do not support this feature.

1) Connect to our server using your browser (insert the address ftp://ftp.veng.com/pub/incoming into your browser's "Location:" entry box).
2) From the File menu, choose "Upload File...".
3) A dialog box should appear; find the archive you wish to upload and click "Open".
4) Send an email notification to proe@veng.com with a brief description of the archive you submitted.  Also, if you send us your name and/or company, we'll make sure you're given recognition for your submission.

Method 2: Use an ftp client to upload files:
This option is really the same as Method 1 except that you're using a independent program to connect to our ftp site instead of your web browser.

1) Connect to ftp.veng.com using your favorite ftp client.
2) cd to the /pub/incoming directory .
3) put your files
4) Send an email notification to proe@veng.com with a brief description of the archive you submitted.  Also, if you send us your name and/or company, we'll make sure you're given recognition for your submission.

Method 3: Attach the archive to an email:

1) Address a new email message to proe@veng.com.
2) In the body of the message, provide a brief description of the archive you are submitting. Also, if you include your name and/or company, we'll make sure you're given recognition for your submission.
3) Click the "Attachment" icon (usually a paperclip) on your email program's screen.
4) A dialog box should appear; find the archive you wish to upload and click "OK".
5) Send the email.
